DIRECTIONS FROM BLUE RIDGE coming North on 515.
From Blue Ridge: Take Hwy 515 north into Blue Ridge. At the only McDonald's in Blue Ridge , take a left onto Hwy 5 north. Go 3.8 miles to a LARGE red and white sign that says "ADVENTURE TRAIL RIDES". Take a left at this sign. Go another 3.8 miles and take a left at a LARGE wooden sign that says "HORSEBACK RIDING" onto Cashes Valley Road. Go 1 mile down that road and take a left at "ADVENTURE TRAIL RIDES" sign and follow signs to Barn.
Think of all the sayings you have heard about horses and you will see how they apply as you are riding. "NO HORSEPLAY ALLOWED!" "HUNGRY AS A HORSE" "YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO WATER BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE THEM DRINK" "HOLD YOUR HORSES" "PEE LIKE A RUSSIAN RACE HORSE" "There are no problem horses, only problem riders"
TIps for the ride: Arrive early to pick your horses Wear a sweater in case you get chilled.DRESS WARM!!!!!!! This is seasonal, please do not show up in the Summer with a Snow suit on- we actually had someone do this!!!! Boots are best as some tennis shoes do not fit stirrups well. No expensive jewelry. Bring a camera Wear cheap sunglasses(if at all) Don't drink too much before a ride Jeans are best- not too tight though! Horses love to eat- don't let them on the trip -when tempted to feel sorry for them- think YELLOW JACKETS NEST!!!!!!! When you come to a low lying tree branch- lean forward..a horse may not care about you but will not run its own head into a tree..
From the Horses; The nicer you are to us, the more we take advantage(thats because most of us are MALE horses):-) If you want to pet us- pet firmly as barely touching us tickles and we have no hands to scratch. Please don't kick us and pull back on the reins at the same time. Please do not shake the reins to make us go.....it only makes us mad. To make us move... bring the reins forward, loosening up on our mouth , give a kick and make a kissing noise.( it makes us feel loved) Please keep your weight in the stirrups... ( Some of you have gained a few pounds over the years) it keeps our backs from hurting so badly. Please do not tailgate on the trail...keep space between horses. Otherwise HORSE ROAD RAGE may occur.!!!!!!!!!!!!!( you ever been tailgated?) :-)
From the Guides Gratutity is never expected but ALWAYS appreciated! Don't be afraid to ask for help, that is what we are here for. If we are not friendly, tell our boss and she will make us clean all the dirty stalls:-) Please arrive early for your ride- if you arrive late or right at the ride time, we get behind schedule and the horses do not get the breaks between rides. Also, our barn boss, Derrick, gets REALLY grouchy if he does not get his lunch break!!!!!!!! If you show up late, he is probabaly going to put you on horses with names like "Farter" ROLLING THUNDER" "BUCK" "RACKER" and "George of the jungle" :-)
For Women only: No thongs- they can cause a might mean saddle sore! Wear lose fitting jeans- many a girl has split her pants climbing up on the horse :-) Just because you used to gallop horses back in the day does not mean you should still do it-please use caution!! Calling 911 is not our favorite thing to do.
For men only- (wear briefs- boxers don't work well!) Wonder why the cowboys always walked funny? Remember to stand up in your stirrups- it will help ...ummmmm...your....you know! :-) Please, leave your wallets in the vehicle- guys lose them on the ride all the time. We know you are intimidated by anything that has a brain. Think how happy you will make your wife and children by getting out instead of playing with the remote.
Hope these tips help you to have a great and safe ride!!! Thanks for choosing Adventure trail Rides and let us know if we can assist you in any other way!
MAY THE HORSE BE WITH YOU!!!!!!! Derrick and Misty Callihan
